The Australian Postgraduate Award Industry (APAI) are scholarships funded through the Australian Research Council’s (ARC) Linkage Projects program.

The Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) is a national research and development initiative at the University of Queensland. The IMB is staffed by a multidisciplinary team of approximately 440 research scientists, postgraduate students and general staff.

An Australian Postgraduate Award Industry (APAI) is available for a PhD student in a new collaborative research program between the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (IMB) at the University of Queensland, and the Spanish Pharmaceutical company Neuropharma.

The Role: The successful candidate will join a well-established and internationally recognized research team, lead by Professor Rob Capon (IMB), working at the interface between scientific disciplines (ecology-biology-chemistry), and across the goals of basic and applied science. The candidate will receive training and hands on access to state of the art technologies across chemistry and biology, and with an emphasis on bioassay, chromatographic and spectroscopic sciences. The candidate will explore the chemistry of Australian marine biodiversity as a source of inspiration for new drugs to treat neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis and Epilepsy.

Applicants must;

  • Have Honors I or its equivalent in Organic Chemistry.
  • Be Australian citizens or residents.
  • Be available for commencement in late 2007 or early 2008.

Applicants should;

  • Be able to demonstrate experience in modern chemical laboratory practices.
  • Have an ability to design and perform tasks in a safe and organized fashion.
  • Have an ability to search and make use of online and electronic resources.
  • Be capable of meeting deadlines and achieving goals within preset timelines.
  • Display an ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills. •
  • Be technologically literate.
  • Possess an enquiring mind.

Remuneration: This is a full-time fixed-term APAI Scholarship which offers $25,118 per annum for 3 years.
