A PhD scholarship for research into the use of direct seeding techniques for the revegetation of disturbed landscapes. This scholarship, funded by the power generation industry, will examine aspects of biodiversity, site preparation, soil and plant nutrients, nutrient and fertiliser use efficiency, plant eco-physiology and soil mycorrhizal development. This is a comparative study looking at the benefits of direct seeding over the use of nursery-grown seedlings. The exact nature of the study will depend on the interests of the candidate and will be agreed between the candidate, supervisors and industry partners.

The main study area will be in southeast Queensland but parallel trials will also be established in central and N Queensland providing opportunity for a study program along a climatic gradient. Candidates will require a manual driving licence and be prepared to spend occasional periods away from home. Willingness to work outdoors under harsh conditions.

This scholarship is available for registration from November 19, 2007 until January 7, 2008. Offered once only to one person. The stipend would be AUD25000 (maximum per annum) and will be paid fortnightly for the period of 3 and a half years. It should be used for research purpose in one of the following fields :

  • Agricultural
  • Veterinary and Environmental Science
  • Biological Science

The research should be started no earlier than January 7, 2008 and no later than July 7, 2011.

The scholarship is available for permanent residents of Australia and have achieved Honours 2a or equivalent
