Provided by Mental Health Research Institute, the study will be undertaken at Rebecca L Cooper Laboratory. The Rebecca L Cooper Laboratory aims to identify the molecular pathways that are involved in the pathologies of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and unipolar depression.

By identifying the pathways involved in the genesis of these diseases The Rebecca L Cooper Lab aim to discover new targets at which drug treatments can be directed. The Laboratory also aims to understand the mechanisms of actions of existing psychotropic drug treatments as a basis of developing improved treatments for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

There are significant differences in protein expression in the cortex of subjects with the MRDE (Muscarinic Receptor Deficit Endophenotype) compared to what has occurred in the cortex of subjects with other forms of schizophrenia.

The successful applicants for this scholarship will address this hypothesis by using 2D electrophoresis and mass-spectrometry, Western blot analyses, real-time PCR and in situ hybridisation, animal models, and cell culture models. The value of scholarship is $18660, being based in line with the University of Melbourne Research Scholarship. If student is relocating from inter-state or New Zealand the Institute would reimburse up to $1000 to assist your relocation.
