Free University of Brussels (VUB) has an independent research group named Switch Laboratory. Switch laboratory is supported by the Flanders Interuniversity Institute for Biotechnology (VIB). This group focuses on essential cellular processes where functional regulation is governed by protein conformational changes that have to be actively controlled to ensure cell viability.
Switch Laboratory is currently offering two PhD positions (3 years project) in the context of a collaborative project in the Brussels region. The project focusses on the relationship between single-nucleotide polymorphisms and protein structure and function in cancer. The aim is to predict the effects that single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and haplotypes have on both the expression levels and structural properties of cancer-related proteins. The best candidates will have a strong background in computational chemistry or structural bioinformatics. Experience with c++ programming and data mining is a serious plus.
