Center for Development Research (ZEF Bonn)

The CoCE II project is funded by the German government for the coming 3 years and aims at developing concepts and strategies for the conservation and use of ecosystem goods and services provided by the landscapes of SW Ethiopia, of which wild Coffea arabica forests are an important element. The project is carried out by an interdisciplinary team of researchers form the natural and social sciences at the University of Bonn in collaboration with the Ethiopian Institute for Biodiversity Conservation, the Addis Ababa University and other important Ethiopian partners.

We are seeking a qualified doctoral candidate to undertake research on economic aspects of the “agro-coffee-forest” systems in an area of SW Ethiopia which has the potential to be designated as biosphere reserve in the coming years. The research topics can range from “costs and benefits of a prospective protected area” to “payments for environmental services”. The aim is to support the overall goal of the subproject to come up with appropriate incentives for the conservation and use of wild Coffea arabica populations in their natural habitat, the montane rainforests of Ethiopia, and to deliver recommendations to the Ethiopian public with realistic advice for implementation.

We expect interested and qualified candidates to submit (until Wed., Sept 23, 2006, 17:00 Hrs)a cover letter, cv, and an outline research proposal of not more than 8 pages which demonstrates their knowledge of the Ethiopian context, suggested research topic/question, relevance of the of the research question, methods applied, expected results.

Application has to be received by 23. September 2006.
