A two years MSc programme is currently offered jointly by the University of Helsinki and Helsinki University of Technology. The programme named as Master’s Degree Programme in Bioinformatics or MBI. The application period has been started since 15 November 2007 (for University of Helsinski) and 1 November 2007 (for Helsinsky University of Technology. The study will be started in Autumn 2008.
Students admitted to the Master’s Degree Programme in Bioinformatics (MBI) pursue a Master of Science degree at the University of Helsinki (HY) or a Master of Science in Technology degree at Helsinki University of Technology (TKK).
You may apply to the Master’s Degree Programme in Bioinformatics to study either at the University of Helsinki or Helsinki University of Technology. The admission quota for the studies starting in September 2008 is 15 students for the University of Helsinki and 7 students for Helsinki University of Technology.
You need to indicate the priority of the two universities on the online registration form. The order is binding and cannot be changed after the application deadline. You may be chosen to one of the universities only. If you are accepted to one of the universities, you cannot remain on the waiting list to the higher prioritized university. The admission criteria for both institutions are the same.
MBI graduates will be able to obtain positions in industrial and academic facilities such as biomedical companies, universities and research institutions. A bioinformatician often acts in a multidisciplinary environment with people from both methodological sciences, and biosciences and medicine. It is thus important that a bioinformatician is able to master topics from different disciplines.
You are eligible to apply to the programme, if you already hold a suitable Bachelor’s degree, or have the degree at latest on 1 August 2008. Suitable fields are computer science, mathematics, statistics, biosciences and medicine, for example. In addition, you need to have at least 60 ECTS compatible credits in total of the following subjects: mathematics, statistics, computer science and bioinformatic
