UK.Three years PhD studentships are currently available within the Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics Research Group, School of Engineering Sciences (SES), which will fully cover University tuition fees (at EU/UK level**) and provide a tax-free bursary of £12,300 per year, rising annually in line withthe UK Government (EPSRC) recommended rate.

** EU/UK fees are £3168 p.a. (subject to increase),and the overseas fee is £12,700 (subject to increase). Therefore overseas applicants will need to find the fees difference of £9532.

This is an opportunity for a student to undertake PhD thesis research in aerodynamics/ computational aeroacoustics in a project related to airframe noise and aerodynamics during approach. We aim to establish an aerodynamic and aeroacoustic model of an important component of a large civil aircraft.

The project involves mainly computational modelling, and the student will have the opportunity to use/develop advanced predictive methods based on computational fluid dynamics to simulate aerodynamics, aeroacoustics and turbulent flows associated with civil aircraft. He/she will explore relevant problems within the aerospace industry.

The PhD studentships are provided by EPSRC. The project is supported byAirbus, who will provide funding and focus to the project, and regular meetings will be held with Airbus UK.

SES is a top 5* rated research school with an international reputation. The successful candidate will work with a group of highly motivated, first class research students in the areas of computational aeroacoustics, engine noise and airframe noise, race car aerodynamics and flow control.

The School is a diverse community which is committed to creating an inclusive working and learning environment in which all individuals are equally treated and valued, and can achieve their potential. The School considers all studentships applications in relation to academic criteria and regardless of the individual’s race, gender, or belief.

Entry requirements: The studentships are available to candidates with the equivalent of a first class or upper second class degree in mathematics, aeronautics and engineering disciplines. The studentships is at the standard EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) rate, commencing on 1 October 2006.
