School of Drama and Creative Industry

The School of Drama and Creative Industries is a lively community of enquiring practitioners. Overall, the spirit of rigorous creative enquiry, inherent in all the work of the School, generates a rich environment in which to pursue research. Areas include:

  • The role of the director in contemporary Scottish theatre
  • Community theatre from political activism through social inclusion to cultural rights and cultural governance; an investigation of the changing face of community theatre in Scotland over 70 years identifying implications for future work
  • Chief executive role in theatre companies: being an artistic director or a producer/manager?
  • National Theatre of Scotland - possible impacts and resonances for the future of Scottish theatre
  • Theatre is just another business? Creative development or business development?

Research at QMU
Queen Margaret University awards two higher degrees by research, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil). Research methods training is offered in the first semester but after that there are no taught elements as such - students are expected to manage their own research project, with guidance from a supervisor. Bursaries cover all tuition fees and provide help with living costs for three years (the prescribed period of study for a PhD).

Bursaries are only available for PhD study based at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh.

To be eligible for a bursary, the following criteria must apply:

  • The applicant meets the standard entry criteria for research degrees.
  • The research proposal is in one of the topic areas specified below
  • Applicants may apply to study on a part-time or full-time basis, but they must be willing to be resident within reach of Edinburgh.
  • Applicants must be willing to study for a full PhD, not an MPhil.
  • Applicants may come from the UK or any other country.

The closing date for applications will be 26 March 2008. No late applications will be accepted.
