UK. PhD Studentships available under a UKAEA Culham Project within the Plasma Physics Research Group, Physics Department, Faculty of Physical Sciences. This project aims at investigating the physics and control of certain types of large scale performance limiting instabilities in magnetic fusion plasmas.
This will involve use of existing numerical codes to study plasma stability in various tokamak devices, as well as significant further development of these simulation tools.
The project also involves comparisons with experiments including with the UKAEA Fusion MAST tokamak, which is located at the Culham Science Centre, where most of the research work will be carried out.
Requirements: Good physics degree (1st or 2(i) of 65% or over) or MSc.
Funding and eligibility: EPSRC CTA Award. Please be aware that EPSRC eligibility restrictions apply i.e. home students receive full funding and normally, unless resident in the UK for the preceding 3 years, only fees would be covered for EU students and overseas students would not be eligible. For further details see the EPSRC website: www.epsrc.ac.uk
