UK. University of Sussex.

Four doctoral studentships are being offered by the Department of Politics & Contemporary European Studies (incorporating as its postgraduate wing the Sussex European Institute). These international scholarships are offered to outstanding candidates from the UK or anywhere else in the world.

These studentships cover all your tuition fees (at the Home/EU rates) for up to three years for Full-Time students (arrangements can also be made for Part-Time applicants). The Studentships will be within the fields of British Politics, Comparative Politics, Political Theory or Contemporary European Studies, and will be subject to satisfactory progress on research through the normal annual review processes, and satisfactory teaching performance.

Applicants are normally expected to hold a Master’s degree or equivalent, or to complete an MA programme in the academic year of the application (receiving the studentship is subject to successful completion of the MA). Applications are welcome from those already registered for a DPhil at Sussex.

Where possible, candidates are also expected to be applying at the same time for research funding from other research councils, e.g. the ESRC if the timing is appropriate, and if successful, are expected to accept that award in preference to a Studentship.

Successful candidates are required to provide the equivalent of 180 hours of teaching, to be completed within four years of starting their DPhil, subject to departmental requirements and their own expertise. They will also be eligible to apply for further teaching, paid at standard University rates.

To apply you need to send (by both email and post) the following by Friday June 23 at the latest: Full name, contact addresses and phone numbers, email address

Covering letter of no more than one page explaining your eligibility for the award, teaching experience and preferences with respect to the following areas: British Politics, Comparative Politics, Political Theory, Contemporary European Studies, and noting availability if an interview should be required.

Copy of Research Proposal, maximum three pages.

Names and addresses of two referees, who must be prepared to respond quickly if required.

CV (max 2 pages), including information on competence and relevant qualifications in English.

This process is separate from your application to the Department for doctoral entry, but we assume that you will either have completed, or will be in the process of completing, such an application.

Applications should be addressed to:
