UK. Rio Tinto Chevening Scholarships are offered to those pursue LLM (Master of Law) in Mineral Law and Policy withinThe Centre for Energy, Petroleum, Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP).

The Centre for Energy, Petroleum, Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) offers an LLM in Mineral Law and Policy, which provides the students with the required interdisciplinary knowledge and skills to deal with the current legal, policy and economic issues and challenges in mineral resources investment and development. Its interdisciplinary nature and perspectives in international and comparative law and the success of its emphasis on a theoretical and practical approach to learning make it one of the premier organisations of its kind worldwide.

Rio Tinto plc, together with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and the Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) at the University of Dundee (United Kingdom), as part of the activities of the partnership between Rio Tinto and the CEPMLP are offering up to a maximum of 10 fully funded postgraduate scholarships for the academic year 2008/2009 leading to the degree: Master of Laws (LLM) in Mineral Law and Policy

The award will offer the successful candidate:

  1. Payment of academic tuition fees
  2. 12 monthly stipends for living expenses for a single student
  3. An arrival allowance; book allowance; thesis/assignment allowance

Applicants eligible for consideration should:

  • Already hold a degree of an equivalent standard to at least a good UK second class honours degree
  • High level of English language competence (generally IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 603 [250 on the computer based test])
  • Preferably be qualified lawyers having had some post-degree work experience in mining in the government, private sector, or academia
  • Be between the ages of 25-35 years
  • Be nationals and residents of the following countries: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Guinea, India, Mongolia, Namibia, Peru, South Africa, USA and Zimbabwe
  • Students are expected to return to the country concerned at the end of their period of study.

Method of Scholarship Selection
Please note that there is no separate application form for the Rio Tinto Chevening Scholarships.

All candidates who are offered unconditional admission to the LLM in Mineral Law and Policy and who satisfy the criteria for consideration for the Scholarship, will be put forward for review by the relevant Committee composed of Rio Tinto plc and CEPMLP staff.

The first step, therefore, is to complete an application form for admission to the LLM in Mineral Law and Policy. The application form can be found by clicking here.
